Collection: HOME STORIES SL24
This Spring Summer 24 Season, designer Jude Ng delves into his Singaporean cultural heritage to create a collection rich in stories of culture clash, where traditional Peranakan Straits Chinese culture meets the westernization of Singapore in the 90s.
.
The designer’s experience of growing up in a Peranakan household rich in ancestral heritage and bound by traditional values, while still embracing the force of change as Singapore grew into a cosmopolitan metropolis, is reflected in this meeting of east and west.
.
90’s street style meets an ornate, Southeast Asian sense of cut, to create a hybrid style all its own, echoing the Peranakan penchant for being ‘culture vultures’ and unabashedly mixing influences from Chinese, Malay, Indian and Colonial cultures. Tailored Nyonya formality is mixed with an effortless twist on unstructured 90’s grunge to create modern, subverted pieces : a reflection of finding cultural identity in contemporary life.
